At some point in almost every brand audit, the Shopify Plus question comes up. The founder is either considering upgrading and wants a clear answer, or they upgraded early and are quietly wondering whether they wasted the money. The honest answer is: it depends on two things, and only two things. What features you actually need, and whether those features generate more than the incremental monthly cost.
Most of the advice online treats this as a revenue milestone question. Hit £1M and upgrade. That framing is useful as a rough heuristic but it misses the point. I have worked with brands at £3M who had no real use for Plus, and brands at £600K who needed it specifically because of what checkout extensibility unlocked for their conversion rate. The decision is feature-led, not revenue-led.
This post covers what Plus actually unlocks, the real cost including what you will spend on apps and development on top of the monthly fee, and a clear framework for making the decision before you commit to a contract.
What Shopify Plus actually unlocks
There are five meaningful differences between Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus. Everything else is marketing language for features that exist on lower plans or are achievable with apps.
Checkout Extensibility
This is the feature that genuinely cannot be replicated on lower plans. Checkout Extensibility lets you add custom React components directly inside the Shopify checkout flow without touching checkout.liquid, which Shopify has deprecated for non-Plus merchants. In practice, you can add post-purchase upsell blocks that appear after payment, custom loyalty point displays showing a customer how close they are to their next reward, gift message fields at line item or order level, and trust signals or guarantee badges inside the payment confirmation step.
The measurable impact for DTC brands is real. Post-purchase upsell through checkout blocks typically converts at 3-8% across the buyer base, at an average uplift of 30-50% of original order value. On a brand doing 500 orders a month at £45 AOV, a 5% uptake at £18 average upsell generates roughly £450 additional monthly revenue, not transformative at this scale but it compounds as you grow. Checkout Extensibility is also essential if you want to build truly native subscription toggle options inside the checkout rather than routing customers to a third-party app interface.
Lower transaction fees
Shopify Plus charges 0.2% on transactions processed outside of Shopify Payments, versus 0.5% on Shopify Advanced. If you are using Shopify Payments exclusively in the UK, this difference applies to third-party payment methods only, primarily PayPal, Klarna, and other alternative payment methods that do not route through Shopify Payments directly.
For brands where a meaningful share of orders go through PayPal or BNPL providers, this is a genuine saving. On £1M annual revenue with 30% of volume through third-party payment methods, the fee difference saves approximately £900 per year. Not transformative on its own, but it adds to the cost-benefit calculation alongside other Plus features.
Shopify Functions
Shopify Functions replaced Shopify Scripts in 2024 and allows you to write custom backend logic that runs at the Shopify infrastructure level. The practical use cases for DTC brands are custom discount logic (bundle discounts, tiered quantity breaks, and cross-product promotions that go beyond what native discount codes support), custom delivery method logic (showing or hiding shipping options based on cart contents or customer tags), and custom payment method filtering.
For many brands, the discount logic use case is the most valuable. Native Shopify discounts cannot combine percentage off with free gift triggers or build true tiered spend incentives without third-party apps. Shopify Functions lets you code exactly the promotion logic your brand needs, without the conflict and performance overhead of multiple stacked discount apps.
Expansion stores
Every Shopify Plus subscription includes up to 10 development stores and up to 9 additional full stores (expansion stores) at no additional monthly cost. Each expansion store is a fully separate Shopify store with its own admin, product catalogue, pricing, checkout, and domain. They share the same Plus contract but operate independently.
For DTC brands with genuine multi-market complexity, this is significant. Running separate UK and US storefronts on a single Plus contract avoids the duplication of Shopify Advanced monthly fees. For a brand managing two or three regional stores, the expansion store inclusion alone can make Plus cheaper than running multiple Advanced plans. For brands using Shopify Markets on a single storefront, the expansion store benefit is less relevant.
Automation and flow capabilities
Shopify Flow is available on Advanced and Plus, but Plus unlocks higher trigger limits, more complex multi-condition workflows, and the ability to trigger flows from custom storefronts and headless setups. For brands doing serious operational automation, tagging high-value customers, triggering restock workflows, or building custom post-purchase sequences that interact with Klaviyo, the Plus-tier Flow limits are meaningful.
Plus also includes access to a dedicated Merchant Success Manager and priority support. If your brand has a complex technical setup or relies heavily on Shopify support for troubleshooting, this is worth something. If you run a straightforward Shopify store with a standard theme and a handful of apps, the support tier difference is unlikely to change your day-to-day.
The real cost of Shopify Plus
The headline fee is $2,500 per month (currently approximately £1,950 at mid-2026 rates). That is roughly £23,400 per year. The difference between Plus and Shopify Advanced (currently around £236 per month in the UK) is approximately £1,660 per month or £19,900 per year.
That incremental £19,900 per year is what needs to be justified. It is also not the only cost to account for. Most brands that move to Plus spend additional money on development work to actually build the checkout extensions or Shopify Functions they moved for. A well-scoped checkout block build with a competent Shopify Partner typically costs £3,000-£8,000 depending on complexity. Custom Function work runs similarly. If you are moving to Plus specifically to build custom checkout features and have not budgeted for the development work, you have underestimated the total cost.
On the savings side: brands moving from multiple Shopify Advanced plans for regional stores can consolidate to a single Plus contract with expansion stores, saving £236 per additional store per month. Transaction fee savings depend on your payment mix and volume. App savings depend on which apps you can retire because Plus native features replace them. Model all three before committing.
The decision framework: when to upgrade, when to wait
Assess your situation against each of these criteria. Plus is worth it if two or more of them apply. If only one applies, you can probably find a cheaper solution.
Upgrade now
You are running two or more Shopify stores for different markets and paying separate Advanced fees. Plus expansion stores make this cheaper.
You have a specific checkout conversion improvement scoped (post-purchase upsell block, subscription toggle, gift messaging) that requires Checkout Extensibility. You have estimated the revenue uplift and it exceeds the incremental cost.
Your transaction volume through third-party payment methods is high enough that the 0.3pp fee saving approaches or exceeds the plan cost difference.
You need custom discount logic (tiered spend, bundle pricing, cross-product incentives) that apps cannot cleanly solve and that Shopify Functions would handle elegantly.
Wait or stay on Advanced
Your primary justification is post-purchase upsell. Apps like ReConvert handle this adequately on Advanced plans at a fraction of the cost difference.
You want checkout customisation for aesthetic reasons (fonts, colours, layout) rather than functional conversion improvements. Theme customisation through the checkout editor is available without Plus.
You are using Shopify Markets on a single storefront for multi-currency and have no operational reason to run separate storefronts per market.
You are below £600K annual revenue and have not yet optimised your email flows, mobile conversion rate, or average order value. Those levers will generate more return than any Shopify Plus feature at this stage.
The three mistakes brands make with Shopify Plus
These come up consistently in audits of brands that upgraded and are now questioning whether it was the right call.
Upgrading before the conversion fundamentals are in place
Shopify Plus does not fix a broken conversion rate. If your product pages convert poorly, your mobile checkout experience is frustrating, or your offer is unclear, no checkout extension will rescue that. The most common pattern I see is a founder spending £1,950 per month on Plus to fix a problem that an £80 per month CRO app or a week of page optimisation would solve. Plus is an amplifier, not a fix. Get your baseline conversion rate above 2.5% before worrying about checkout blocks.
Not budgeting for development work
Checkout Extensibility and Shopify Functions are developer features. The checkout block that you can see in a Shopify demo has been built by a developer. If your team does not include someone who can write React components and deploy them through the Partner Dashboard, you need to budget for external development. Quoting a developer to build a single post-purchase upsell block typically comes in at £3,000-£6,000. Custom Functions work, if it requires bespoke logic, runs similarly. Factor these into your total cost before committing.
Treating the plan upgrade as the work
The upgrade is not the project. What the upgrade enables is the project. Brands that upgrade to Plus and then spend three months "exploring what they can build" without a specific, scoped improvement in mind are paying £1,950 per month for potential. The brands that extract full value from Plus are the ones that move to it with a specific feature or outcome already designed, so development can start the week the contract is signed.
What the numbers actually look like at different scales
These are approximate models, not guarantees. Your actual numbers will vary based on payment mix, app stack, and how effectively you deploy the Plus features.
Annual revenue
Incremental Plus cost
Estimated savings
Net position
£400K
+£19,900/yr
£800-£2,000/yr from fees + apps
Net cost £17,900+. Hard to justify without a specific feature need.
£700K
+£19,900/yr
£2,500-£5,000/yr from fees + apps + 2nd store saving
Net cost £14,900-£17,400. Break-even if Plus features drive 2-3% CRO lift.
£1.2M
+£19,900/yr
£5,000-£9,000/yr fees + apps + multi-store
Net cost £10,900-£14,900. Typically justified if one checkout feature works.
£2.5M+
+£19,900/yr
£10,000-£18,000/yr fees + apps + multi-store
Net cost under £10,000. Almost always cost-positive with full Plus deployment.
Models assume UK pricing, Shopify Payments as primary gateway, one regional expansion store need, and moderate app replacement. Development costs for checkout extensions excluded.
How to negotiate Shopify Plus
Shopify Plus pricing is not fixed. The $2,500 per month is a floor, not a ceiling of what is negotiable. Brands migrating from Magento, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce often receive discounted rates for the first 12 months. Brands committing to a 24 or 36-month contract typically negotiate 10-20% off the standard rate. If you are being introduced to Shopify Plus through a Shopify Partner agency, they can often facilitate better commercial terms than you would access directly.
Always ask for: a discounted first year, waived onboarding fees, included development hours through a Partner credit, and clarification on what triggers the revenue-based pricing above $800K monthly revenue so you can model your true cost at scale.
One more thing worth knowing: Shopify Plus contracts include a migration period during which your existing plan continues to run while the Plus environment is configured. Make sure you have full clarity on when billing switches and whether there is an overlap period you are paying for both plans simultaneously.

Frequently asked questions
What is Shopify Plus and how is it different from Shopify Advanced?
Shopify Plus is the enterprise tier of Shopify, designed for brands doing significant volume. The core differences from Shopify Advanced are: a lower transaction fee (0.2% vs 0.5% on Advanced), full access to Checkout Extensibility to customise the checkout UI without touching Liquid, up to 10 expansion stores included in the subscription, access to Shopify Functions to build custom discount logic and delivery customisations, and a dedicated merchant success manager. Advanced gives you most of the reporting and automation features, but Plus is the only plan where you control the checkout at the code level.
How much does Shopify Plus cost in 2026?
Shopify Plus starts at $2,500 per month (approximately £1,950) on a revenue-based model up to $800K monthly revenue, after which pricing moves to 0.25% of monthly revenue. In practice most growing DTC brands in the £500K-£5M annual revenue range pay the flat $2,500/month. Shopify occasionally runs promotional rates for annual commitments and you should always negotiate, especially if you are committing to a multi-year contract or migrating from another platform.
At what revenue does Shopify Plus become cost-neutral?
The transaction fee saving alone starts to offset the cost difference at around £700K-£900K annual revenue, depending on your payment mix. On Shopify Advanced you pay 0.5% transaction fee; on Plus you pay 0.2%. The 0.3 percentage point difference saves £3,000 per year on every £1M processed. Add the avoided cost of apps that Plus features replace and the break-even for many brands is £600K-£800K annual revenue.
What does Checkout Extensibility unlock for DTC brands?
Checkout Extensibility lets you add custom UI components directly inside the Shopify checkout flow. Practically, this means you can add post-purchase upsell blocks, custom loyalty point displays, gift message fields, and trust signals inside the checkout. Post-purchase upsell through checkout blocks typically converts at 3-8%, at an average uplift of 30-50% of original order value. Checkout Extensibility is also the only way to build truly native subscription toggle options inside the checkout rather than routing customers through a third-party app interface.
Can I replicate Shopify Plus features with apps on a lower plan?
Some features can be replicated, some cannot. Post-purchase upsell is available via apps like ReConvert on all plans. However, true Checkout Extensibility (adding components inside the checkout flow itself) is exclusive to Plus. Expansion stores are not available on lower plans. If your specific needs are post-purchase upsell and complex discounts, you may be able to stay on Advanced longer. If you need checkout UI control or are running multi-market storefronts, Plus is the only path.
What are the signs a DTC brand is ready for Shopify Plus?
The clearest indicators are: monthly revenue consistently above £55K-£65K; you are losing revenue because you cannot customise the checkout; you are running multiple regional storefronts that are painful to manage separately; your transaction fee saving starts to offset the monthly cost difference; or a specific technical requirement such as checkout blocks or custom Shopify Functions discount logic is blocking a conversion improvement you have already scoped. Revenue alone is not sufficient justification. The question is whether a specific Plus feature unlocks more revenue or efficiency than the incremental cost.
